When I have started my genealogy research, I knew a little about Bernshtam family branch. The only thing I knew that my grandfather's parents lived near Melitopol, Ukraine. After exploring genealogy databases at http://www.jewishgen.org, I have discovered that surname Bernshtam (as well as Berenshtam, Berenstamm ...) mostly was widespreaded in Latvia. I have asked other reaserchers, I studied my family history, I requested records from archives and now I'm sure that all Bernshtams in the world have roots in Courland (Kurzeme in modern Latvia).
